- Abstract
- applies to art in which the artist has started with some visible object and abstracted elements from it to arrive at a more or less simplified form. This also applies to forms/image that have no source at all in external reality
- Architecture
- applies to images based on manmade buildings or structures
- Figurative
- refers to images that retain strong references to the real world and particularly to the human figure. Figures can be abstract, idealized or realistic
- Floral
- refers to images representing nature, particularly flowers. May reference the real world or an abstracted form
- Landscape
- applies to art in which the artist has established a horizon line as separation between earth and sky. The landscape may be naturalistic, a reflection of the natural world, idealized or abstracted. Landscapes may feature trees, water, buildings etc
- Modernism / Modern Art
- applies to works of art that reflect a criticism of the concept of art, asking the question 'what is art'
- Still Life
- refers to the subject matter being anything that does not move or is dead. A still life includes all kinds of man-made or natural objects
